A Custom Wooden Cedar Bath Mat
I received an unusual request to make a bath mat made out of cedar. This is definitely not a common request for a carpenter or contractor.
In reality, cedar is actually quite a great choice for a wet environment like a bathroom since it has a natural ability to repel water. It also looks great in its natural state or as a material, it takes a coat of stain very well. Think of a cedar deck outside your back door.. you can leave it “as is” or you can stain it…the choice is yours!
After talking to the client about the size of the cedar bath mat I got to work. I used my table saw to divide the cedar into strips. I made them 1 and 1/2 inch wide. The strips size are personal preference and can be made wider or thinner depending on preference. The next tool I needed to make the bath mat perfect was my power miter saw (chop saw) to cut the pieces to length. Next on the agenda was attaching all the pieces together. The client and I decided to leave the cedar wood in its natural state.
The best part about this scenario is the sweet smell you get when you exit the shower! When the cedar mat gets wet you will be able to smell the wood. I love the smell of cedar. Thats why people make cedar chests, line closets in cedar. and have cedar balls for their drawers. Cedar is a carpenters dream…it looks great , is durable and smells divine!
