I built this custom deck in the Spring and the client wanted this wood deck protected and stained.  Deck staining has its pros and cons.  Pro: the wood is protected from the elements. The stain brings out the beauty of the wood and almost gives it a “shine”. Con: there is allot of maintenance in re sanding and applying  stain to a deck every few years due to the weather conditions in Canada.

The customer chose a clear stain so it would highlight the grain of the wood and deck.  To protect the deck, as a carpenter, I chose to brush on the stain instead of spraying since brushing the oil base paint provides better penetration into the wood.  There is also the added bonus of less prep work in hand applying than spraying the deck as well.

As a carpenter deck building and staining in Canada, I had to wait for the right weather conditions to complete this project.  The perfect weather conditions of no rain and lots of sun for at least five days in a row is required.  Not so easy this summer with the rain and the extreme heat and pop up thunderstorms! My goal of pleasing the client from start to finish is complete.  Happy (almost) end of summer!
